WHO WE ARE
The Upper Merion Park and Historic Foundation is a non profit tax exempt organization which is governed by a very active board of directors. We have a small budget, and a membership of some 250 individuals and families. The membership is the major source of our annual support. The board meets bi-monthly, and holds an annual meeting of its members.
We date back almost four decades, having been founded in 1964. Our beginning was the result of a survey undertaken by the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Upper Merion, to find out what the citizens of the area felt was their most pressing need. The overwhelming response was the need to preserve the natural beauty of the area and its amenities, and that this should be done on as large a scale as possible, beyond and in addition to the efforts of local government.
Following this survey, the Jaycees formed a committee of both their own members and other concerned citizens to consider possible action. In due course, this committee acted and incorporated the Upper Merion Park and Historic Foundation on December 18, 1964.
Some of the Foundation's Accomplishments:
- Secured funds and vital land to create the McKaig Nature Education Center in 1979.
- Provides funds for preservation of historic buildings and open space - King of Prussia Inn, Moore-Irwin House, and Mt. Pleasant Playground.
- Jointly maintains the Nature Center with Upper Merion Township.
- Stages the annual Celebration of Seasons for the community.
- Supports Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts in environmental projects leading to advanced badges.
- Leads nature study classes in the Nature Center.
- Conducts yearly leaf identification seminars for biology students.
- Donates environmentally and historically related books to libraries.
